And so this is Christmas...

"So this is Christmas, and what have you done?"  I've heard this song from John Lennon often over the last few weeks.  And, I've asked myself that question a few times.  It's been a great year with lots of new challenges, but when it comes to my health and fitness levels, I've definitely not set the bar.  With that, here's a meme I've also seen a few times recently - which just about sums up my year.

So, with no further ado, it's time to get to work.  I've been hitting the gym 3-4 days per week since the beginning of November.  I've learned that it's not what you put out, but what you put in.  So, time to change the diet and keep the exercise.   Here's my top four diet rules that I will be implementing:

  1. Drink water - lots and lot of water.  I just purchased a 40oz Camelbak Chute Water Bottle (see pic!) that I will fill and drink at least three times a day!
  2. No more soda or sugary drinks!!!  I think I just drink this stuff out of convenience, so, if it's not around, I won't drink it.  No more purchasing will help with the budget too!  My home is now a "No Soda Zone" - Sorry Susan and kids...
  3. Run, run, run!!!  My current morning routine consists of a 5:15am instructor led work-out.  HIIT on T/Th and Spin M/W/F.  I'm not much of a Spin fan - I think it's kind of boring.  But it does get a good sweat going.  The HIIT is a great all around workout.  But I still miss my running.  So, my plan is to get a race on the calendar and start hitting the streets with an afternoon run and Saturday long run.
  4. Join a support group!  For the last few Januaries, I've kicked off the year with a Biggest Loser weight loss contest.  This year I'm changing the title to Rich's 2018 Health & Wellness Challenge.  The goal is still to lose weight - but the focus needs to shift to long term health & wellness changes.  If you'd like to join - click the picture below!  The cost is $20 and there is a great Facebook group for support and encouragement!
Can't wait to get 2018 started in the right direction!
